Unclaimed and Obscured Scholarships

The vicious cycle of student debt from unpaid student loans is a horrific part of a student’s semester. College is expensive, whether you attend a university, community college, or technical school. Each year, thousands of dollars meant for students do not reach their destination. A lot of times, the student had no clue of the existence of said money because of how obscure these scholarships are. So these obscure scholarships are often left unclaimed.
The little interests you have, your family roots, and more entitle you to many of these. In fact, just being born gives you entitlement to a few of these unclaimed scholarships(Link 1). If we don’t know about these unorthodox scholarships, how are we supposed to claim them? So many exist that we never heard of.
“Talk About Sticking To It”, is one of these oddballs. To earn $3000 in college funds, all that is required is to go to your high school prom dressed in nothing but duct tape. That’s right! Send in a picture of you and your date, and the winners are later chosen. Who’s going to think to dress in duct tape to their prom without reading something like this? The numbers are few. (Link 2)
Here’s an interesting one with it’s business out in the open. A scholarship of $1000 is awarded to high school seniors or recent graduates who have been a member of a nudist organization for at least three years. I’m no nudist, but if I would have known I’d get $1000 to be in my birthday suit for three years, I probably wouldn’t of done it still. Though there are people who would, and that’s why we have these strange scholarships. (Link 3)
Another obscure scholarship that probably has gone unclaimed by many due to it’s “uniqueness”, is the “Make It With Wool” competitive scholarship. Prizes of $1000 and $2000 are given to the competitors who make the best wool garments. Each garment is judged on a number of aspects then the winners are awarded the scholarships. (Link 3)
With so many of these obscure scholarships often left unclaimed in the student financial world, we face a painful truth. So many students can not afford to go to school, or so they think. If everyone was aware of these lesser known scholarships and competitions, more students could afford college. They would do so with the scholarship money that was awarded to them for being who they are, doing what they enjoy, and where they came from. These obscure scholarships often left unclaimed can help our generation of students greatly. We just need to work together, spread the word, and make these hidden scholarships better known.
